Human, Machine, Building, and Urban Space Interaction in an IoT Era
「物聯網時代的人類、機器、建築、與城市空間互動」 章倩宁、刘昇阳、王静 ZHANG Qianning, Sunnie Sing Yeung LAU, WANG Jing Urban space, once designed, is difficult to interact with users and be changed according to different needs. Nowadays, with advanced technologies, situations are changing. The booming Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology connects people and space in a new way, making urban space more interactive and responsive. Under these circumstances, people and space can communicate with each other, and urban space can identify individuals and understand their needs in unperceiving ways. This research project is to study an individual’s preference for space and its surrounding environment through advanced sensing and IoT technologies that interact between participants and space, and the implication of quality of the spatial design on user behavior. The main installation of the project is a 4m x 4m x 4m three-dimensional space. Participants can play with the physical construct (the seating cube modules) within the space until they find the most preferred layouts. Meanwhile, participants can change the projected images by changing their facial expressions to create their own “space mood”. Various human behaviors, environment-related factors, locations of each seating module, and the general information of participants (change of the expressions) are recorded by sensors and IoT devices to promote real-time feedbacks and dynamic participation of participants. The collected data will be analysed to explore the spatial and environmental preferences of different groups of participants, and the potential of how these set of technologies could help people interact with their immediate space and urban environment. In short, this project encourages visitors to create a preferred semi-public space of their own while their choices are identified and recorded by ubiquitous detecting and analysing algorithms. This research project is a testing bed for human-space interactive innovation. To suggest an alternative to citizen participation in public space, which is enabled by advanced IoT technologies. The urban space can “morph” and change its spatial and environmental configurations in response to the engaged users.
